MapCollaborator is GreenInfo Network’s online tool for creating and improving GIS data. The web application allows you to use MapCollaborator to “crowdsource” your data – like a wiki, anyone you allow can post notes, make edits, even upload their own GIS data (these revisions don’t change the underlying data, however).
The demo version allows users to improve protected lands data, but the possibilities are endless. Collaborate with colleagues on conservation opportunities, project boundaries, or identify community priorities. Overlay your organization’s data onto the MapCollaborator base, and work together more efficiently.

BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill is disastrous in countless different ways. It is undeniably an environmental catastrophe, destroying key marine and shoreline habitats. The Commission for Environmental Cooperation has recently compiled their North American Environmental Atlas, which includes Marine Protected Areas and Marine Ecoregions, and we were curious to see how these areas are being affected by the oil spill. Unfortunately, these “protected” areas are turning into toxic waters. Download the Google Earth file and play the tour from the table of contents to see the extent of the oil spill, it’s predicted extent, and how our marine habitats are being affected.

Do people realize the powerful role that neighborhoods and social factors play in the development of disease?
An interesting article published by the Oakland Tribune makes the case that unhealthy neighborhoods play a far greater role in triggering diseases than germs, bad genes or irresponsible behavior.

The Oakland Tribune published some interesting maps this week: Tracking the average time people spend commuting to work from Bay Area communities, and Comparing travel costs for commuting via car vs. public transit. Considering the input variables changed in each commute comparison, I’m not clear on the direct conclusion, but some interesting things for people to consider as they commute to work.

While I am a map geek, I also enjoy photo scrapbooks. I came across these two interests of mine meshed into one….A scrapbook cover designed out of vintage maps!
I thought this was a great use of old maps – scrapbook page backgrounds, album covers, etc. A definite must to keep sake the memories of my next road trip!
